MEV, MAV, MRV: Volume Landmarks Explained
Where the MEV–MAV–MRV volume-landmark framework comes from, what each threshold means, and how to use it as a planning tool instead of treating it as law.

Together they turn “how many sets should I do?” into a range you move through over a training block rather than a fixed prescription. Where the framework comes from
The volume-landmark language was popularized by Dr. Mike Israetel and Renaissance Periodization as a practical planning system, not as the output of a single experiment. It packages a well-supported idea — that hypertrophy follows a dose-response curve with diminishing returns and a recovery ceiling — into thresholds a lifter can actually program around.
The underlying science is solid. Schoenfeld and colleagues’ 2017 meta-analysis established the dose-response relationship between weekly sets and muscle growth, and a 2026 Sports Medicine meta-regression confirmed both the positive slope and its flattening at higher volumes. The idea that there’s a floor below which you won’t grow, a productive middle, and a ceiling past which recovery fails is consistent with that data. What the data does not provide is a precise MEV or MRV number for your chest — those specific set counts are educated estimates layered on top of the science.
The three landmarks

Read the numbers as illustrative, not measured. They line up with the broader literature — a 2022 Journal of Human Kinetics review landed on 12–20 weekly sets as a good standard target, squarely in the MAV zone — but the exact edges shift with training age, effort, and recovery.

How to actually use it
The framework’s real value is as a progression map, not a set of hard walls:
- Start near MEV at the beginning of a block, when your tolerance is fresh.
- Add sets gradually toward MAV as long as you keep progressing and recovering.
- Approach MRV only briefly, then deload to shed accumulated fatigue before it stalls you — the same fatigue-management logic behind why planned deloads work.
- Reset lower after the deload and climb again.
That rise-and-reset rhythm is the point. Sitting permanently at your ceiling is how productive training tips into junk volume — sets that cost recovery without adding growth. And because the landmarks depend entirely on what a “set” is worth, they only work if you’re counting genuinely hard sets and attributing compound-lift sets sensibly across the muscles they train.

Why you shouldn’t treat it as law
Three honest caveats keep this framework useful instead of misleading:
The numbers are population estimates. Your true MRV isn’t printed anywhere — it reveals itself only when your performance stalls and recovery falls behind. The landmark chart is a starting hypothesis you test against yourself.
MRV is a moving target. It rises and falls with sleep, nutrition, life stress, and other training. A week of poor sleep can drop your recoverable volume well below last month’s. This is why readiness matters as much as the number on the plan — checking in with something like the Recovery Readiness Questionnaire can flag when your ceiling has dropped.
The precision is borrowed. The dose-response shape is well evidenced; the exact MEV/MRV set counts are not measured constants and vary between individuals and even studies. Treat a jump from “18 sets” to “20 sets” as noise, not a meaningful threshold crossing.
For lifters who prefer to autoregulate rather than chase set counts, the landmark system pairs naturally with effort-based loading via RPE: use the landmarks to bound your volume and RPE to bound your intensity.

MEV, MAV, and MRV are a clean way to think about volume as a range you travel through — start at the floor, build toward the sweet spot, brush the ceiling, then deload and repeat. The framework rests on genuine dose-response science, but the specific numbers attached to each landmark are estimates, not laws, and your personal MRV shifts with recovery.
