How this works
Methodology reviewed July 2026Weekly training volume is counted in hard sets — working sets taken close to failure — per muscle group, the unit most consistent with the resistance-training dose-response literature. For each muscle the tool compares your weekly sets against three landmarks: the minimum effective volume (MEV) below which growth stimulus is weak, a productive adaptive range in the middle, and the maximum recoverable volume (MRV) beyond which added sets tend to outpace recovery. Your entry is placed on a colour-coded track spanning those zones and labeled, and the tool sums your total weekly sets and counts how many muscles fall short, sit in range, or exceed their ceiling.

- A "hard set" is a working set taken within roughly 0–4 reps of failure; warm-ups and easy sets do not count.
- The MEV/MRV landmarks used are representative population values from resistance-training guidelines, not individually measured thresholds.
- Sets for a muscle are counted wherever it is the target, so compound lifts contribute to more than one muscle in a real program (you decide how to attribute them).
- Volume is only one training variable; intensity, proximity to failure, exercise selection, and technique are assumed adequate.
- Individual MEV and MRV vary substantially with training experience, genetics, sleep, nutrition, and stress; the landmarks are a starting range, not a personal prescription.
- Counting sets does not capture effort or execution — ten junk sets are not equivalent to ten hard ones, and the tool cannot tell the difference.
- Attributing compound-movement sets across muscles is a judgment call the tool leaves entirely to you, so totals depend on how you count.
- More volume is not automatically better; the productive range and MRV exist precisely because returns diminish and then reverse.
- Increasing volume abruptly toward or past MRV raises injury and overtraining risk — change volume gradually and prioritize recovery.
- These figures describe hypertrophy stimulus, not joint or connective-tissue tolerance, which often lags muscle capacity.
