Some mornings the answer is obvious: you feel great, or you feel wrecked. Most mornings live in the murky middle, and that’s where a structured check-in beats gut instinct. Instead of asking the vague “do I feel like training?” (the answer is often no, and often wrong), you rate a handful of specific things (sleep quality, sleep duration, soreness, energy, mood, and stress) and let the pattern tell you whether to train hard, modify, or rest. Why a subjective check-in is worth taking seriously

It’s tempting to assume that “how I feel” is too soft to base decisions on. The research says otherwise. A widely cited 2016 systematic review by Saw, Main, and Gastin in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that subjective self-report measures of wellbeing responded to changes in training load with greater sensitivity and consistency than commonly used objective markers like heart rate and blood-based tests. In plain terms: a short daily rating of how you feel often catches accumulating fatigue earlier than a lab panel.

That doesn’t make the number an oracle. It makes it a cheap, fast, surprisingly informative input, one you can collect every day at zero cost. The point of the questionnaire is to convert a fuzzy feeling into a repeatable number you can compare against yourself.

Reading your score

The six ratings sum to a readiness score that maps to a recommendation. The bands matter less than what you do inside them.

The most important row is the middle one. A moderate score is a reason to adjust the session to how you actually feel, not to skip training. That usually means keeping the movement and cutting the last sets or the top-end loads.

What to do with a low score

A low score triggers the reflex to either grind through (“discipline”) or bail entirely (“rest day”). Both are usually wrong.

Grinding through a low-readiness day means training in a state where technique degrades, perceived effort is inflated, and the session adds fatigue without much adaptation. Bailing entirely throws away the substantial benefit of low-intensity movement, which can aid recovery without adding meaningful stress, the case we make in active recovery vs rest.

A better default menu for a low day:

  • Cut volume first. Keep intensity roughly normal but do fewer sets. This preserves the training signal while slashing the fatigue cost. The Training Volume Calculator helps you see what “half volume” looks like.
  • Or cut intensity. Keep the movement patterns but drop the load and leave more reps in reserve.
  • Or go easy. Zone 2 cardio, mobility, a walk: movement that recovers rather than taxes.
  • Rest fully when the score is very low and you have obvious reasons (poor sleep, illness brewing, high life stress stacking up).

The biggest mistake is reacting to one bad morning. A single low reading is heavily influenced by last night’s sleep, a stressful day, alcohol, or just noise. The same lesson shows up in HRV-guided training: the meta-analytic benefit comes from acting on smoothed trends, not obeying every daily wobble.

Track for a week or two before your numbers mean much. Then watch for two patterns: a sharp drop from your own normal (a red flag for that day), and a slow slide across many days (a red flag for your whole training block). The slow slide is what the ECSS/ACSM overtraining consensus describes as the road from functional overreaching into non-functional overreaching, the point where fatigue stops being productive. That’s a cue to deload, not to add willpower.
